LIFE SKETCH OF MD. MUJIBUL HAQUE

            Md. Mujibul Haque was born on 1st September 1954 in a aristocratic Muslim family in Tarail Upazilla of Kishoreganj district. His father is Late Munshi Abdul Malek and mother Late Harunnesa.

           

            Md. Haque started his primary education in 1960. He completed his secondary schooling in 1970 and higher secondary schooling in 1972. He obtained both his LL.B (Hon’s) and LL.M degrees from Dhaka University in 1981 and 1982   respectively.

            While in university he participated actively in student politics. He served as the elected VP of Haji Mohsin Hall of the Dhaka University for the 1980-1981 term.

            Md. Mujibul Haque is a freedom fighter of Bangladesh having taken part in its great liberation war in 1971 from sector 11.  Later he served as the unit commander of Dhaka University Central Freedom Fighters’ Council for the 1978-1980 term. He then served as a member of the Central Command Council of the Freedom Fighters’ Council from 1980- 1986. He was also the president of Kishoreganj District Red Crescent Society from 1988 to 1990.

 Md. Haque started his professional life as a Judge under the Bangladesh Civil Service, Judicial Cadre. He resigned as a judge in 1986 and joined politics in order to serve the mass people and the society and above all, his country. He later practiced as a lawyer.

            Md. Mujibul Haque was elected as a member of parliament for the first time in 1986 from Kishoregang -3 constituency. He was re-elected  again in 1988. In the general election of 2008 he defeated the BNP candidate by a margin of one lac nine thousand votes. He was elected as a member of parliament for the fourth time in January 2014.  

            Md. Mujibul Haque served as a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Establishment and the Estimate Committee from 1986 to 1990. He was also the first Chairman of Kishoreganj Zilla Parishad, holding the post from 1988-1990. He served in the parliamentary Standing Committee under Ministry of Home Affairs from 2009-2013. A historical private members bill titled ‘Parents Maintenance  Bill’ ‘পিতা মাতার ভরন-পোষন আইন’ was introduced by Md. Mujibul Haque MP in the Ninth Parliament and was passed unanimously as ‘Parents Maintenance Act-2013’ which is now acting as a safeguard for the old parents in our society.   

 He was also the Deputy Minister for Land from 1987 to 1988. Prior to the January 2014 elections, Mr. Haque served in the interim cabinet as the State Minister for Youth and Sports from 21 November 2013 to 12 January 2014. He was subsequently given the post of the

State Minister for Labour and Employment after the elections and has been serving in that post till date.

            Mr. Haque has visited many countries around the world. The list includes India, Pakistan, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Canada, China, Egypt, Turkey, United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, UAE, Thailand etc. He visited Ethiopia, Uganda and Canada as a member of the National Parliamentary Union. In September 2013 he took part in the Annual UN General Assembly conference as a member of the Bangladesh delegation with the Hon’ble Prime Minister. He also visited Abu Dhadi and Dubai in 2014 as a delegation member with the Hon’ble Prime Minister.   

            Mr. Mujibul Haque got married in 1982. His wife, Mrs. Roxana Quader is serving the Bangladesh government as a member of BCS Administration Cadre (Additional Secretary). He has two sons. His elder son Ziaul Haque Niloy is a Barrister at law and is practicing in the Supreme Court of Bangladesh and youngest son Israrul Haque Nafi is now studying for his undergraduate degree in Canada.
